If you’re stuck in the perfect storm of the winter cold and the mid-year slump, you should hop on a plane and in less than three hours you could be on the balmy island of Mauritius. Even better than that, you should treat yourself to a stay at the newly renovated and expanded Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers. You’re guaranteed to come back with a renewed energy for the day-to-day grind.
We were amongst a small group of media who were invited to attend Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers’ inauguration event and rub shoulders with elected officials, media personalities, partners, investors, artists and journalists from around the world. Our friends, Jo-Ann Strauss, Maps Maponyane, Melinda Bam, Adriaan Bergh, Basetsana Kumalo and Siba Mtongana were among some of the familiar faces from South Africa who joined in on the multi-cultural celebration.
To ease us into the week however, we started our island jaunt at Club Med Plantation D’Albion where the parties were spectacularly fun and the day time chilling is suitably catered for. Cocktails and Phoenix beer on the beach and buffets that boggle the mind are all par for the course.

We then moved on to Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers, where to be honest with you, I have never seen a more beautiful stretch of beach and ocean. The sunsets were breathtaking and it was hard not to just want to sit for days staring at the sea.
But there was so much to do and just not enough time. The resort recently underwent renovations and extensions totalling 42 million euros - making it the flagship of Club Med in Mauritius. When you arrive there, you are immediatey immersed into the Mauritian culture with the contemporary architecture and design of the resort. And if you are lucky, you could have a suite that is literally a hop, skip and a jump from the ocean.
You would think that you would want to spend hours just lazing on the beach loungers and you absolutely can. But Club Med resorts are geared for active couples and the sailing, paddling , snorkelling and scuba diving are so much fun! All their resorts offer over 60 signature land and water activities included in the price so you will definitely end up trying one of them. We had the most mind-blowing wakeboarding performance by the pros there during the inaugural event.
One thing that really struck me was how families with kids of all ages are catered for and how incredibly relaxed everyone is. There are spaces specifically designed for families to spend time together and fun activities and facilities for children. These cater for tiny babies from 4 months old to teenagers up to 17 years old throughout the day and evenings should parents need a date night, all under the supervision of certified childminders.
But best of all is there is a place for adults to escape to – the zen zone – because holidays should be fun for the whole family! This beautiful space, designed for relaxation is strategically located close to a quiet beach with a zen pool and a health bar, and offers real moments of relaxation. Needless to say, we were a little too rowdy for that area one late afternoon, leading up to the last night of our stay!
The Club Med night life is something to behold. From trapeze artists and dancers to live entertainment and the inevitable thumping dance floor in the early hours of the morning – it is all pretty intoxicating. If you want to feel like you are high on life – you have got to experience all of this.
The Club Med packages are all-Inclusive so once you pay for your holiday before you depart, you can rest assured all accommodation, food, drink and activities are included which means your wallet can also take a break and you will not be hit with an unexpected bill at the end of the holiday.
So, stop whinging about the cold, get online or visit The Agency by Club Med and book yourself a week away because the time to be happy is now and the place to be happy is Club Med.
Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers is located about 1 hour away by car from the international airport, in the north of Mauritius on a preserved site in Grand Bay, and thanks to its mild tropical climate, it’s a destination for all year round.
