It was sad to hear Transport Minister, Sibusiso Ndebele, remarking on national television that he feels safer driving abroad - particularly in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom - than on his own native land. Some of the reasons he cited were that South African drivers rank amongst the most reckless and murderous in the world. I’m tempted to agree with the minister. We have a high rate of accident deaths that rivals most countries in the world. But the minister’s remarks didn’t inspire confi dence in his department’s expertise to reduce the death rate on our roads.
